development path
The company was founded in 1961 as Hewlett-Packard's semiconductor products division. The division spun off from HP in 1999 and became part of Agilent Technologies. KKR and Silver Lake Partners acquired Agilent Technologies' chip unit for $2.6 billion in 2005 and formed Avago Technologies. Avago Technologies agreed to sell its I/O Solutions unit to PMC-Sierra in October 2005 for $42.5 million.
In August 2008, the company filed for a $400 million initial public offering. In October 2008, Avago Technologies acquired the Munich-based bulk acoustic wave business of Infineon Technologies for €21.5 million.
In 2009, Avago Technologies was listed on Nasdaq under the stock code AVGO.
Avago Technologies announced its April 2013 agreement to acquire optical chip and component supplier CyOptics for $400 million. The acquisition is intended to expand Avago Technologies' fiber optic product portfolio.
In October 2013, Avago Technologies invested $5 million in power electronics technology provider Amantys as part of a strategic investment agreement between the two companies.
Avago Technologies announced an agreement to acquire LSI Corporation for $6.6 billion in December 2013. The acquisition moves Avago Technologies away from specialized products and toward more mainstream industries, including chips and especially data center storage.
The company sold its SSD controller business to Seagate Technology in May 2014. In August 2014, the company was the ninth largest semiconductor company. Avago Technologies agrees to sell LSI's Axxia Networking business to Intel for $650 million. The company also agreed to acquire integrated circuit designer PLX Technology for $309 million. [21] In February 2015, it was announced that Avago Technologies Limited had reached an agreement to acquire Emulex Corporation for $8 per share in cash.
On May 28, 2015, Avago announced that it would acquire Broadcom Corporation for US$37 billion (US$17 billion in cash and US$20 billion in stock). The combined company will be named Broadcom Ltd. and will have annual revenue of $15 billion and a market value of $77 billion. Broadcom Corp. has significantly strengthened Avago Technologies' patent position in areas such as mobile, data centers and the Internet of Things, making the company the ninth-largest patent holder among top semiconductor suppliers LexInnova, according to an analysis by technology consulting firm LexInnova. The deal closed on February 1, 2016, according to the company's website.
In 2016, Broadcom proposed a merger with Brocade Communications Systems. The merger was deferred to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States for review. The lawsuit relates to the name change of the parent company from Broadcom Ltd. to Broadcom Inc. The former Broadcom merger in 2016, Broadcom Corp., is still a wholly-owned subsidiary of the renamed parent company, Broadcom Inc.
In November 2017, Broadcom proposed to acquire Qualcomm for US$130 billion, but was rejected by Qualcomm's board of directors. President Trump blocked the revised $117 billion merger through an executive order citing national security concerns.
